SEO, AEO, and GEO: What Every Nonprofit Needs to Know Right Now

If your organization has a website, chances are someone along the way suggested you work on your search engine optimization, your SEO. It made sense. When someone typed "food bank in Phoenix" or "youth mentorship programs near me" into Google, you wanted to show up. Ranking on page one meant being found, and being found meant more donors, more volunteers, and more awareness for your mission.
That still matters. But it's no longer the whole picture, because the way people search for information has fundamentally changed.
Today, there are three distinct ways people find organizations like yours online, and each one requires a different approach. Think of it this way: SEO is the highway system your nonprofit has been traveling for years. AEO and GEO are the newer roads, and they're carrying more and more of the traffic.
SEO: The Foundation
SEO, or search engine optimization, is the practice of making your website visible in traditional search engines like Google and Yahoo!. It involves using the right meta-tags, including keywords and page descriptions, as well as maintaining a fast and well-structured site, and earning links from other credible websites. If someone types a question into Google and clicks through a list of results to find you, that's SEO doing its job. And the goal here was to always land on page 1 of Google’s search. Of course, this still matters, but it's no longer the whole picture, thanks to the rise of AEO and GEO.
AEO: The Answer, Not the List
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. Platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews no longer just hand users a list of links to browse. They answer questions directly, in plain conversational English, and they pull from sources from the Internet they've determined to be credible and clear.
Think of AEO like being quoted in a news article. A reporter asked a question, and your organization provided a useful, specific answer. You got cited. But that citation isn't your full story. It's a single moment where your content happened to be the right answer to a specific question. AEO is about making sure your website and other related published content is structured so AI tools can find those answers in your content and trust them enough to use them.
GEO: Your Brand in the Age of AI
GEO, or generative engine optimization, goes a level deeper. Where AEO is about answering a specific question, GEO is about how AI understands and represents your nonprofit overall, across every platform, every mention, and every context.
If AEO is the quote in the article, GEO is your brand…your reputation. It's whether AI tools, when asked anything related to your mission or field, consistently describe your organization accurately, credibly, and compellingly. GEO shapes how your nonprofit's full identity is understood by AI, not just in one answer, but across the entire landscape of AI-generated content. And just like SEO in the past, your nonprofit wants to show up in GEO. It’s like ChatGPT recommending your nonprofit, which is pretty influential and impactful.

Why This Matters Right Now
According to the 2025 Brand Discovery in the Age of AI Report, 4.5% of donors are already using chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude to find and research causes, and donors who arrive at a nonprofit's website from a chatbot give an average gift of $250. That number is small today. It won't be for long. Funders, program officers, and major donors are increasingly AI-native in how they research and make decisions. If your organization isn't visible and credible in AI-generated answers, you may be losing influence before anyone has read a single word of your grant proposal.
We don’t want this to happen.
At Refugio Partners, we help nonprofits understand exactly where they stand in this new landscape. It starts with an AEO/GEO audit that shows you how AI is scoring your organization right now, compared it to similar nonprofits, and also what it would take to improve it.
