Refugio Partners was founded in Santa Barbara, California, a place of breathtaking beauty and deep community roots.
In 2020, we watched COVID-19 silence a once-bustling State Street. Big retailers pulled out while soaring real estate and leases pushed small businesses to the brink.
The ones that survived did so through sheer grit and sacrifice. They now face a new challenge: a tidal wave of AI technology is swelling that will forever reshape the small business landscape.
That is why Refugio Partners exists. We sit alongside small business owners as partners who help cut through the complexity of new technology to find what works for their business.
Small businesses help define a city and they need to thrive for a healthier community.
Refugio (noun): A place of shelter, protection, or safety; a refuge or sanctuary. A rustic mountain hut or guesthouse that provides basic lodging and meals for trekkers and mountaineers.
That's exactly what we set out to build. For the small business fighting to survive. For the nonprofit always doing more with less. For every organization that just needs someone in their corner.

Further Motivation
Our commitment to nonprofits runs just as deep, and it's personal.
Our founding partners and their families have been touched by heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's. We've experienced firsthand extreme poverty in countries such as Uganda and the South African township of Soweto. We also know what happens when the organizations fighting these battles are under-resourced and overlooked.
We believe AI has the power not just to help non-profits operate better, but also accelerate the awareness, research, and community support that could one day help cure these diseases and human crisis.
But our focus doesn't stop there. Whether it's the hungry, the homeless, the abused, or the environment, all are experiencing crises and need more support. These are the organizations carrying heavy loads with fewer and fewer resources. They deserve better tools, stronger support, and a partner who genuinely believes in what they're fighting for.
